The
Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department
is celebrating its 75th Anniversary! Although
an electrical engineering degree has been offered
at the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez
since it’s founding in 1911, it wasn’t until
1928 when the University hired Prof. George
F. Anton as an electrical engineering instructor
that the discipline really took off. One year
later a formal committee was established with
the objective of structuring a competitive electrical
engineering program. The committee was successful
in its endeavor, as can be garnered from the
fact that in 1932 the electrical engineering
program was formally recognized by the American
Institute of Electrical Engineers (now the Institute
of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, IEEE)
as a “standard” course of study – the highest
recognition bestowed at that time for academic
programs – more info on the early years can
be found in our History
Facts section.
So, who
are we now? We are the premiere science and
technology knowledge creator in Puerto Rico,
the Caribbean, and Latin America. We are internationally
renowned for the quality of our faculty members,
students, and alumni. We are more than “Colegiales”
– we are INEL ICOM. Want proof? Check the ECE
Highlights section…
As an ECE
alumnus you have contributed to our Department’s
transformation from a humble technical degree
granting institution into a top-notch, internationally
recognized science and technology knowledge
creator. The ECE Department values what you
have done for it as much as you undoubtedly
value what it has done for you…it only makes
sense then that we continue our respective journeys
together – as a team. That is why we have created
this website – it will allow us to communicate
and interact, to dream and work together.
In this
website you will also obtain information on
a wide variety of activities that have been
planned as part of our 75th Anniversary celebration
Planned Activities.
These activities will highlight past successes
and establish our vision for the future. All
activities will take place between April 1 and
October 31, 2003. We hope you will join us in
as many of these activities as possible. In
particular, we would love to see you in October’s
“Primera Gala Pro Nuevo Edificio INEL
ICOM”.
I hope you
feel as excited as we do about our future, and
as proud as we do regarding our past.
Don’t forget
to register
as an ECE alumni and to visit the ECE
Alumni Network, where you can find
contact information for those not-so-old classmates
you may have lost touch with.
Saludos.
